Welcome to The BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair). It’s the bar where our play takes place. It’s run by a collective — sort of like the brilliant company of actors who devised this play. Just before social distancing began, we interviewed six members of the Austin community who identity as having a disability — and from their words, the cast dreamed up the world of this play. It’s a world where community overcomes discrimination. It’s a world where de-centered voices are centered. This play is meant to be performed live. We meet you, viewer, online. We are without all of the tricks of the theatre, the liveness of an audience, the laughter and applause, even the late theater-goer who enters during a critical moment in Act 1. But we do have imagination. I invite you to use yours tonight (or this morning, or whenever you watch). As this process has reminded me, with our collective imagination we can envision a better - more just - world. And through collective effort, we can fight for and build that world. Until we can gather together in a theatre some day soon… Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.
